Mystified by the Supreme Court decision of allowing green firecrackers to be burst on Diwali, Sadar Bazar Welfare Association in Delhi on Wednesday protested against the order by putting firecrackers inside green vegetables.

"We don't even know what green crackers are. There is no green cracker in the market," Sadar Bazar Welfare Association President HS Chhabra said.

"When we asked those (SHOs), they said they'll give us a list of crackers. But the next day they said it'll take 2 more days. There is no green cracker in the market. This should've been done 1 year in advance,” he added

The Supreme Court on October 23 denied to impose a blanket ban on the sale of firecrackers ahead of Diwali, the bench however issued strict guidelines regarding the sale and manufacturing of the same.

A division bench presided by Justice AK Sikhri and Justice Ashok Bhushan permitted the sale and manufacture of green and low emission crackers.

The bench also banned the online sale of crackers and it also put a restraint on e-commerce portals from selling them and the responsibility is placed on the companies.

The bench further ruled that on the day of Diwali and other religious festivals, burning of crackers will be between 8 PM and 10 PM.

Justice AK Sikri said, “We know in each household, the children are affected. 28 to 30 percent of children we know suffer from ailments like asthma and bronchitis owing to the harmful effects of smoke. But do we need a complete ban and control or regulate the sale for a minimal effect that is what we have to decide.”

Earlier in October last year, the Supreme Court had imposed a temporary ban on the sale of firecrackers in Delhi NCR. This ban, the Court had said, was to test the effectiveness of such a ban on pollution levels, if any.
