A 25-year-old software engineer belonging to Andhra Pradesh committed suicide in Pune on Thursday and in his suicide note, he blamed the lack of job security in the industry. Gopikrishna Guruprasad attempted to slash his wrists in a hotel in Pune, then jumped off the fourth floor of the hotel.

The Information Technology (IT) industry entered the job market and made great leaps and bounds, offering money, prestige, and opportunities. As the industry grew, so did the applicants. But now that there is a reduction of jobs and more layoffs continue to be announced, what happens to the software engineers?

In the suicide note recovered by the police, Guruprasad wrote, "In IT there is no job security. I am worried a lot about my family."

The police were contacted by hotel management after Guruprasad jumped from the fourth floor, and he was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

Guruprasad had been working with an IT company in Pune and previously had worked in Delhi and Hyderabad.

The layoffs in the IT industry have become worse since the H-1B visa became more stringent, as most Indian IT companies used H-1B visas to send employees to the US. IT workers body Forum for Information Technology Employees or FITE) has protested against the large-scale layoffs by IT companies.
