After weeks of struggle and anticipation, the two factions of Tamil Nadu based political party - All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) have finally announced a merger.

Announcing the merger, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E. Palaniswami said that the former Chief Minister and leader of the other faction, O. Panneerselval will be the convener of the party while he himself will be the co-convener.

“Our first priority will be to retrieve the two leaves symbol. We will fulfill all the promises made by Amma,” the Chief Minister said.

Reciting late AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa, the Chief Minister said, “Amma (Jayalalithaa) had said that after me AIADMK will last over 100 years. We all will make sure it happens.”

Announcing an 11 member coordination committee to run the party, Palaniswami said that the party had few difficulties in recent times, similar to what had happened after MGR's demise, but both OPS & EPS came forward to unite.

The factions had broken off due to disagreements that rose up following the demise of AIADMK chief Jayaram Jayalalithaa last year.

When the talks of merger had started the OPS faction had laid three conditions for the merger: keeping out AIADMK General Secretary and the now jailed VK Sasikala and her family, ordering a judicial probe into Jayalalithaa's death and converting her home into a memorial.
