In a recent development in the alleged irregularity in Foreign Investment Promotion Boards (FIPB) clearances to INX Media, the Supreme Court has directed Karti Chidambaram, son of former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, to appear before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on August 23 for questioning.

A Supreme Court bench, comprising of Chief Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar and Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, on Friday, directed Karti Chidambaram to appear before the court.

Karti, before the apex court, alleged that he was being harassed in order to target his father. His council also argued that it has become a fashion for the CBI to target the relatives of prominent politicians.

Citing Karti's unwillingness to appear before the CBI, the Supreme Court Bench asked Karti, "Do you want to say you are too good to appear before the CBI?"

Karti responded saying that he had no problem in appearing before the court, however, he would need protection.

The top court then agreed to allow Chidambaram's advocate to accompany him " who will be sitting in the room adjoining the one" he will be interrogated in.

The Investigation agency is alleging that the firms owned by Karti had influenced the FIPB to approve Rs 305 crore worth of irregular investment in INX media.
