Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has been charged with abetment to suicide in his wife Sunanda Pushkar's death case, whose lifeless body was found in suite number 345 of the Leela Hotel in 2014. Ever since the high-profile case made headlines, the entire nation was waiting for a verdict.

As per a chargesheet filed before Metropolitan Magistrate Dharmender Singh at the Patiala House court, Sunanda had committed suicide and Tharoor reportedly had a hand in pushing her towards taking such a huge step due to which he has also been charged with cruelty in his marriage.

Reportedly, Shashi Tharoor has been charged under section 306 and 498A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) which pertain to abetment to suicide and cruelty to wife. An FIR under IPC Section 302 (murder) was registered on the pretext that Sunanda was poisoned on January 1, 2015, against unknown persons.

Tharoor can only be summoned by the court as a suspect, said, the public prosecutor. The court is likely to take cognisance of the chargesheet on May 24, where Delhi Police might force his summon for further interrogation. Days before her death, Pushkar has accused her husband publically of having an affair with Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar.

Two days before Sunanda death, she had an argument with Tharoor on a flight from Kerala to Delhi and left the latter at Delhi airport before checking into a hotel. Traces of Alzolam were found in her body upon post-mortem and a strip of the sleeping pills was found in her room.

More than 4 years after her death, the special investigation team (SIT) probing the case submitted a draft final report after conducting "thorough professional and scientific investigations" and "legal scrutiny". The SIT was formed one year after the FIR was registered in the case.
