Southwest Monsoon To Hit Kerala On May 28: Skymet

The Southwest Monsoon will hit the mainland Indian subcontinent on May 28 as per Skymet, a Noida based organisation that provides weather forecasting services.

As per Skymet, the margin of error in their forecast is plus/minus two days. This means that the Southwest Monsoon could hit Kerala between 26 to 30 May. Skymet says that the Monsoon will reach the Bay of Bengal and North Andaman Sea almost a week before Southwest Monsoon hits Kerala.

The usual date for the onset of monsoon in Kerala is June 1. Skymet predicts that this onset of monsoon could be the earliest in 8 years.

Both Skymet, as well as the Meteorological Department of India, have predicted a normal monsoon in the country. A normal monsoon will be a good news for Indians especially the farmers who depend on timely and adequate rains.

Meanwhile, Kerala is already witnessing pre-monsoon showers. The state starts experiences good rains in the month of May. Skymet predicts that Kerala will continue getting rains till the onset of monsoon.   

Last year Monsoon ended with below normal rainfall in the country. Skymet had in its forecast warned of below normal rainfall. The countrywide cumulative rainfall for the overall season from June 1 till September 30 was recorded at 841.3 mm against the normal rains of 887.5 mm.
