Inaugurating the Karnataka government's 'Indira Canteen' on Wednesday, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi made a short speech, in which the grandson of the former Prime Minister made a mistake calling it 'Amma Canteen' instead.

The Congress Vice President was in Karnataka to inaugurate the 'Indira Canteen' started by the State's Chief Minister Siddaramaiah promising hygienic meals at an affordable price.

Rahul Gandhi, in his speech, said, "Every citizen of Karnataka, under the Siddaramaiah government should feel he won't go hungry. That is the vision of the Amma...Indira Canteen."

Amma canteen is also an affordable food programme in Tamil Nadu, started by state's former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

While Rahul did correct himself almost immediately after saying it, his entire speech was ridden with similar mistakes. He even referred to the canteen as campaigns more than once.

Rahul Gandhi praised the Siddaramaiah government for reaching out to the poor in the state and availing them affordable food.

He said, "The chief minister has told me he will open many more such canteens across the state. Most cities in Bengaluru will have such canteens soon." Bengaluru is the capital of the Karnataka.

Later, he mentioned the affordability of the food stressing that breakfast would be available for a mere Rs 5, while lunch and dinner would only cost Rs 10. He said, "I have told the state government to ensure the hygiene here is as good as that at the most expensive restaurant in Bengaluru."

The Congress is projecting these canteens as major outreach to the poor.

However, many have opposed the programme by the government. Residents' welfare associations (RWA) have opposed the canteens as they would take up too much of public space.
