Merely days after a report from the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) said that food served on the Indian Railways is not fit for human consumption, a dead lizard was found in a meal on the Poorva Express in Uttar Pradesh.

A group of pilgrims traveling from Jharkhand to UP spotted the dead lizard in the vegetable biryani that the railways served on the train near Patna. When they informed about the incidence, a staffer simply threw the meal out of the train. The complaint then reached the ticket examiner and pantry car attendant but again received no suitable response, so the passengers tweeted the incident to Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu, who is known for being active on twitter.

Following the tweet, several senior officials boarded the train at the Mughalsarai station in UP and gave medication to the passengers who had taken ill due to the meal.

According to senior railway officer at Mughalsarai, Kishore Kumar, the biggest concern was passengers' health.

"Before the train arrived here, doctors inquired about their health and also prescribed medicine. We will investigate and take strong action," media quoted Kumar as saying.

Kumar added that a report would be given to the ministry over the incident.

The CAG had submitted their report to the Parliament on the quality of railway food being 'unfit' for humans after they examined 74 railways stations and 80 trains across the country. In their report, CAG cited unhygienic cooking conditions and usage of expired products among other factors.
