Shiv Sena Leader Arrested As Ghatkopar Building Collapse Death Toll Reaches 17

Shiv Sena leader Sunil Shitap has been booked for culpable homicide by the Mumbai police after it was revealed that his constructions on the ground floor of the Ghatkopar building in Mumbai likely played a major role in the building's collapse, which killed 17 people.

Although the exact cause of the collapse of the building is yet to be confirmed, it's suspected that Shitap's renovations on the ground floor, during which he allegedly removed critical load bearing pillars in order to make the are more spacious, is the major cause of the building collapse on Tuesday.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis visited the site of the building collapse and has directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to file a report on the incident within 15 days.

"The offence has been registered. Police is investigating the matter. I have directed the BMC commissioner to investigate and submit a report within 15 days," the Maharashtra CM told media.

"Government will take stringent action against the culprits," he added.

The 4-storeyed residential building in Ghatkopar suburb of Mumbai collapsed on early Tuesday morning and a search and rescue operation was launched as 30-40 people were believed to be trapped under the debris. The death toll continued to rise overnight as several of the injured succumbed to their injuries while in the hospital.

The ground floor of the building was a former Nursing Home which was being renovated by Shitap.
