An accused, in a gangrape and murder of a 16-years-old Shimla girl, has been found dead in his jail cell after an alleged scuffle between jail mates.

Rajinder Singh, the main accused in the rape and murder case has allegedly killed Surat Singh, a Nepalese, by smashing his head on the floor in a jail cell.

The police said, “The prime suspect allegedly murdered a fellow accused in the case in the police lock-up on Wednesday.” He added, “Both of them had a scuffle over some issue and Surat got grievous head injuries. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead.”

As the incident of the lock-up killing came to light, hundreds of locals gathered around the Kotkhai police station, pelted stones on the building, forcibly entered the station and even assaulted some of the officers.

The mob, protesting against the lapse of police that led to the killing of an accused inside the station lockup ransacked the station and didn’t allow the injured officers to be taken to the hospital.

Earlier, a 16years-old girl was found dead in the Halaila forests in Kotkhai, two days after she went missing on her way home from school. Postmortem reports confirmed that she was raped and strangled.

As the incident surfaced, massive protest burst out in Himachal Pradesh demanding justice for the 16-year-old school girl.

The family of the girl suspect that the “real culprits”, belonging to high-profile families, have gotten away scot-free. The victim’s sister told the media, “Earlier, we were told that the accused belonged to high-profile families and they were on the run.” She added, “Suddenly, the police arrested six persons, four of whom were labourers -- two from Uttarakhand and two from Nepal.”

“We are demanding justice for our sister. Our protests will continue till the real culprits are apprehended,” she said.

Last week, the state government also agreed to recommend a CBI probe into the case, however, the victim’s sister said, “no CBI official has so far started investigation in the case.”
