Government's order of mandatory linking Aadhaar card with various services including Bank Accounts, SIM card among others till March 31 was given an extension by Supreme Court on Tuesday indefinitely.

In its interim order, SC specified that Aadhaar will remain in force till the five-judge bench gives its judgment on petitions challenging the constitutional validity of 12-digit unique identity number.

The Supreme Court said, "SC extends March 31 deadline for Aadhaar linkages till the constitution bench delivers judgement on the matter," adding, "The government cannot insist for mandatory Aadhaar even for the issuance of Tatkal passport."

A five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra had confirmed on March 7 that giving a justified judgement towards the petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Aadhaar Act by March 31 won't really be possible.

The bench comprising justices A K Sikri, A M Khanwilkar, D Y Chandrachud and Ashok Bhushan had earlier said that since the matter would have implications on financial institutions like banks and stock exchange, it would create a huge problem of compliance if the deadline was extended at the last moment.

The apex court had earlier extended the deadline for linking of Aadhaar with bank accounts and mobile phones to March 31 on December 15 last year.

Earlier, the top court had observed that the alleged defect of citizens' biometric details under the Aadhaar scheme being collected without any law could be cured by subsequently bringing in a statute.
