Days after sparkling action against terrorism in the state, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has warned that meddling with Article 35(A) of the Indian Constitution that empowers the state's legislature to define “permanent residents” of the state and provide special rights and privileges to those permanent residents, would invite repercussions.

As the Supreme Court debates the Article 35(A), Chief Minister Mufti has said that any change to the law will invite repercussions and mean that will be able to protect the Indian National Flag in the state.

Speaking at an event in Kashmir on Friday, Mufti said, “When I was growing, Indira Gandhi represented India for me. Maybe some people won't like it, but to me, India is Indira Gandhi.”

Hailing the former Prime Minister, Mufti said that she was the ideal representative of India and that 'India is Indira Gandhi' for her.

She also praised the current Prime Minister Narendra Modi as 'man of the moment', who, as she believes, can be the true harbinger of peace and stability in the Valley.

She said, “Prime Minister Modi has the potential to become the man of history and his leadership is an asset which needs to be harnessed. Our hopes are pinned on him to work together and bring Kashmir out of the mess.”

She also objected revoking state’s special status given to it under Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, which grants special autonomous status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir. She said that the state’s special status and flag were the two crucial elements in the Valley's culture and heritage.
