Rohtak Gears Up For Dera Chief Ram Rahim Sentencing Today, Army Kept On Standby

In the wake of the violent protests following the conviction of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh resulting in 36 deaths, extra precautions have been taken to ensure peace when the CBI court pronounces the quantum of sentence to Ram Rahim on Monday at 2:30 PM.

Convicted in a rape case, Ram Rahim was airlifted to the Rohtak district jail on Friday. Considering the security risks, CBI judge Jagdeep Singh will be flown to the Rohtak jail on Monday to announce the sentence.

Rohtak IGP Navdeep Singh Virk said, "Court proceedings would be held inside the district jail premises at Sunariya village on Monday."

As per directives of the Punjab and Haryana high court, a special court will be set up in the rest-house inside the jail to conduct the proceedings.

At least 9,000 police personnel and paramilitary troops have been deployed while the Army has been kept on standby, fearing violence across Haryana. Security has been tightened in Panchkula, Chandigarh, and Mohali with barricades being set up and security personnel monitoring all vehicles passing through the 3 cities.

In addition, more than 100 Dera followers who hold key positions in Rohtak have been taken into police custody while 10 congregations centres have also been shut down as a precautionary measure.

To prevent Dera followers from entering Rohtak on Monday, vehicles entering Rohtak from Delhi have been diverted and all trains and bus services to Rohtak have also been suspended. Meanwhile, the Punjab government has extended the suspension of mobile internet, SMS and dongle services till August 29 in view of Ram Rahim's sentencing on Monday.
