Returning Home From Independence Day Celebrations, Class 8 Girl Raped In Chandigarh

Showing that brutality does not back off even on days of national importance such as the 70th Independence Day of India, a Class 8th student was raped by an unknown man while returning home from attending an Independence Day function at her government school in Chandigarh.

The 12-13-year-old girl was returning home from her Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 23 when an unknown man raped her at knifepoint at a nullah located near the Children Traffic Park (CTP) in Sector 23 of Chandigarh around 11 AM on Tuesday.

Police have registered a FIR against the accused under charges of rape and various sections of the Protection Of Children from Sexual offences (POCSO) Act at the Sector 17 police station.

Chandigarh's Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Eish Singhal and other police officers who were attending the main Independence Day functions at the Parade Ground in Sector 17 rushed to the spot.

SSP (UT) Eish Singhal said, “An FIR was lodged and the medical examination of victim got conducted at GMSH- 16. The suspect has been rounded up, investigation is underway, the girl is in stable condition."

According to reports, the victim managed to escape from the location and reached her house in Sector 24 where she narrated the incident to her parents who filed the complaint with the police.

After receiving the information of the incident, police force including senior officers and women police personnel cordoned off the scene of the crime near CTP in Sector 23, closing off the entry gate for the general public.

The incident of the minor's rape comes despite heavy police protection in the area due to Independence Day functions.

Recently in Chandigarh, on August 4, a daughter of an IAS officer reported being stalked and an attempt of abduction, accusing the son of Haryana BJP chief Subhash Barala, Vikas Barala of the incident. Vikas Barala and his friend Ashish Kumar also in the car at the time were later arrested.
