Renowned Scientist And Professor Yash Pal Dies At Age 90, PM Modi Offers Condolences

Padma Vibhushan awardee, the globally famous scientist and Professor Yash Pal passed away at the age of 90 years in Noida on Tuesday.

Born in 1926 in Jhang which is now in Pakistan, Pal was famous for his contribution to the study of cosmic rays.

Raised in Kaithal, now Haryana, Pal graduated with a masters degree in Physics from the Panjab University in 1949 and subsequently gained a Ph.D. degree in Physics from the famous Massachusetts Insitute of Technology (MIT) in 1958.

Pal began his career at Mumbai's Tata Institute of Fundamental Research where he was a member of the 'cosmic rays group'

Appointed by the government to several school and higher education reform committees, Yash Pal became the chair of the steering committee of the National Council of Educational Research and Training's National Curriculum Framework.

He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1976 for his contribution to science and space technology and later received a Padma Vibhudhshan in 2013.

Pal also received the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award for excellence in public administration, academics, and management in October 2011.

In 2009, Yash Pal chaired the committee which was set up by the human resources development ministry to look into reforming higher education in the country and the committee came to be called the Yash Pal Committee.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on the death of the academician.
