Adding to the stream of unusual comments made by BJP leaders, BJP MLA Gopal Parmar from Madhya Pradesh's Agar Malwa constituency, on Saturday blamed the increase in minimum legal age of marriage of women to 18 years as being responsible for 'love jihad' cases.

Parmar, during an event to promote skill development, claimed that ending the practice of child marriage is responsible for girls eloping and the issue of 'love jihad' which refers to girls converting to Islam after falling in love with Muslim men.

“Earlier, our elders fixed our marriages in childhood and the marriages lasted longer. But after the government made 18 the legal marriageable age, our girls started eloping and things like love jihad started,” said Parmar.

"Ever since the 18-year 'disease' (legal age for a girl's marriage) became legal, many girls started eloping," he said.

“I am not saying solemnise weddings before girls turn 18. I am saying that, at least, family elders fix the marriage so that no one is able to trap girls. Their minds will not be affected as they would always be conscious of the fact that their marriage is fixed,” Parmar said.

“Generally, our women are trapped easily with sweet talk and gestures. It is the duty of our mothers to make their daughters, who are closer to them, understand this. I urge mothers to alert their daughters about love jihad,” he said.

"As the girls reach adolescence, their mind starts wandering. I urge the mothers to remain vigilant of the love jihad," said Parmar.

“The government’s idea behind introducing legal age (for marriage of women) was different, but now some Muslims change their names and cheat Hindu women,” he said.

"There are some goonda elements in Muslims who adopt Hindu names to exploit girls in the name of Love Jihad. If marriages are fixed early then girls can be saved from Love Jihad," Parmar said.
