Remembering APJ Abdul Kalam: The Unforgettable 'Missile Man' Of India

India's former President APJ Abdul Kalam's visions were not bound with his death. The ace scientist will always be remembered as a 'People’s President' due to his humble persona and the undeniable contributions he made to the country.

Today, at the 86th birth anniversary of the late missile technologist, let us take a glance through some of his dreams and values which made him the most loved President of India.

- Born on October 15, 1931, Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was not a religious person but had a syncretic childhood. His quotes collective from Quran and the Bhagavad Gita are proof of his diversified beliefs. His father Jainulabdeen was an imam at a local mosque.

- Kalam graduated in physics and aerospace engineering from the Madras Institute of Technology in Chennai. His missed the opportunity of becoming a fighter pilot by one mere slot but for better. He later joined Defence Research and Development Organisation as a scientist.

- He served as the project director of India's first Satellite Launch Vehicle for Indian Space Research Organisation. His involvement with the country’s civilian space programme and military missile development efforts earned him the sobriquet ‘India’s Missile Man’.

- After serving the Defence Minister as the Chief Scientific Adviser and Secretary to DRDO from July 1992 to December 1999, he was elevated to the President of India in 2002 succeeding KR Narayanan.

- The Bharat Ratna-recipient was known for his modesty, strong beliefs against the death sentence, passion towards the nation, will to transform the society and giving away all his salary and savings. He has inspired many youngsters to harness Science and Technology for human welfare.

- The much loved President took his last breath after addressing a gathering at IIM Shillong on the evening of July 27, 2015. The kind teacher has never shied away from showcasing his love for children and promoting education in India.
