While the special CBI court heard the two sides' arguments before announcing its sentence for the rape convict Ram Rahim Singh in 15-year-old case, which accused him of raping and sexually assaulting two of his women followers in his Dera headquarter in Haryana's Sirsa, the Dera chief broke down in tears asking for mercy in the court.
A special courtroom had been set up in the Rohtak's Sunaria Jail, where Dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was lodged after the court held him guilty in the rape case, to pronounce the sentence.
Haryana Director General of Police (DGP) B.S. Sandhu had said that the sect chief would not be brought to the Panchkula court for sentencing on Monday due to security concerns.
"The sentencing will either be done through video conferencing or, if required, the court will be held there (Rohtak prison)," the DGP had said.
Earlier, the special CBI Court had held the Dera chief guilty of raping two of his women followers in a 15-year-old case.
