The flamboyant 'godman' Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was finally sentenced to 20 years in jail on Monday for raping two of his female disciples. Ram Rahim who had broken down in tears during the sentencing itself and wailed, "I am innocent... please forgive me," has reportedly spent his first night in jail weeping as well.

Ram Rahim, or now prisoner number 1997, began his 20-year prison sentence as he exchanged his bright clothes for a prison-issued uniform at the Sunaria jail near Rohtak in Haryana.

According to reports, Ram Rahim has continuously been weeping since he returned to jail after the sentencing and has refused to speak to anyone. He also refused to eat solid food, accepting only sips of milk and water.

Currently, Ram Rahim has been lodged in an 'approval' cell at the Rohtak prison, close to the offices of the jail authorities and will not be sharing cells with anyone for security reasons. Two policemen and two security guards have been appointed for his protection, as compared to the Z plus security the Dera chief enjoyed before conviction.

The conviction of Ram Rahim in the rape cases against him trigerred violent protests in Haryana, Punjab and even some areas of Delhi when the Dera followers engaged in rioting, resulting in the death of 38 people and injury of 200 others. As a result, extra security precation was taken for the sentencing which was conducted at the Sunaria jail itself with the CBI judge being flown in to pronounce the quantum of sentence. However, apart from isolated incidents in Sirsa, no violence was witnessed on Monday, the day of sentencing.
