Convicted of rape, the sentencing of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh on Monday took place in a makeshift court in Rohtak's Sonaria jail after the violence that shook Haryana after Ram Rahim's conviction on Friday.

Special CBI judge Jagdeep Singh, who was to pronounce the quantum of sentence to Ram Rahim was flown in by chopper to the Sonaria jail where a makeshift court had been set up for the sentencing. The prison was provided with maximum security with Border Security Force (BSF) personnel setting up bunkers right outside the prison.

Convicted under section 376 for rape, the punishment ranges from a minimum of 7 years to a maximum of life imprisonment and since Ram Rahim was convicted for the rape of 2 female disciples he could receive sentences either simultaneously for both crimes or separately.

The court session began as Judge Jagdeep Singh allotted 10 minutes each to both the sides to put forth their arguments regarding the quantum of sentencing.

The CBI argued that since he misused the trust of his disciples and repeatedly raped them, he should be given maximum punishment.
