Putting an end to speculation, a day after the Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was sentenced to 20 years in jail for raping two women disciples, his son Jasmeet Insan on Tuesday was appointed as the new head of the Dera.

Since the 'godman' Ram Rahim had been convicted of rape, rumours were rife as to who would be the next leader of the sect if he were sentenced to jail. As per Dera Sacha Sauda traditions, the new administrator of the sect is never chosen from the immediate family of the former chief, which is why the appointment of Jasmeet comes as an unprecedented move.

Earlier reports had suggested that Ram Rahim's adopted daughter Honeypreet, considered very close to him may be handed the reins, while another strong contender was Guru Brahmachari Vipasana the 'nambardaar', second-in-command after the Dera chief who managed all the organisation's events.

The new Dera chief Jasmeet is a businessman married to Punjab Congress leader Harminder Singh Jassi’s daughter. Recent reports suggest that Jasmeet had been declared as the successor to his father in 2007 itself after Ram Rahim was charge-sheeted by the CBI in rape and murder cases.

The Dera Sacha Sauda sect, which has followers numbering into the millions, is listed as an NGO, thereby exempting it from taxes under Income Tax Act’s Section 10(23) and has its headquarters in Sirsa, Haryana. The Dera headquarters is a sprawling complex which includes a multi-specialty hospital, a stadium and large numbers of luxury vehicles.
