Presidential elect Ram Nath Kovind is set to be sworn in as the 14th President of India on Tuesday, and he began the day with a visit to the Mahatma Gandhi memorial at Rajghat along with his wife Savita Kovind.
Former Bihar governor and the NDA candidate for the presidential elections, Kovind won with more than 65 percent votes when the results were declared on July 20, beating his competition, the Opposition's candidate former Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar.
Since both the presidential candidates belonged to a Dalit background, the election was pegged as being Dalit vs Dalit, however, Kumar maintained that it was a 'battle of ideologies'.
Backed by 40 parties, Kovind also had support from parties outside the NDA, most prominently Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar who despite vouching for Opposition's unity, gave his support to Kovind.
An advocate of the Supreme Court, Kovind has twice served as a member of the Rajya Sabha and is also a former president of the BJP Dalit Morcha. Kovind is regarded as a pioneer for the rights of weaker sections of society.
During his tenure as a Parliamentarian, Kovind served as a member on several important Parliamentary Committees, namely:
-Parliamentary Committee on Welfare of Scheduled Castes/Tribes.
-Parliamentary Committee on Home Affairs.
-Parliamentary Committee on Petroleum and Natural Gas.
-Parliamentary Committee on Social Justice and Empowerment.
-Parliamentary Committee on Law and Justice.
-Chairman of Rajya Sabha House Committee.
