Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar may have been conspicuously absent at the meeting of 18 Opposition parties on Tuesday to select their candidate for the Vice President post, however, in a phone call with Congress VP Rahul Gandhi, he reportedly confirmed support for Gopalkrishna Gandhi.
Following the meeting of the Opposition parties on Tuesday, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi and a former governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi was unanimously selected as the Opposition's candidate for the post of Vice President. Since Bihar CM was not able to attend, citing ill health, he sent Sharad Yadav in his place to attend the Opposition party meeting.
According to reports, over the phone call, Rahul Gandhi and Nitish Kumar discussed various issues, including Kumar's support for Gopalkrishna Gandhi. Returning from his foreign holiday, Rahul Gandhi had cleared his agenda especially to focus on Nitish.
Kumar's support for the NDA presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind, despite himself vouching for the importance of unity amongst the Opposition, had the other parties concerned about Kumar's support for the Opposition. The CM, however, stated that supporting the NDA candidate was a one-off chance and that he remained committed to opposition unity.
The silence of Kumar on the recent CBI raids on his ally Lalu Prasad Yadav and Lalu's children further put into the question of how far he will support the ruling BJP government in other matters.
