The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Thursday arrested Vinay Bansal, the nephew of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in connection with the Public Works Department (PWD) scam. Vinay is the son of Kejriwal's late brother-in-law, Surender Bansal.

According to the Delhi Police, the arrest was based on unsatisfactory answers of the accused during questioning.

On May 8, 2017, a total of 3 FIRs were registered by the ACB against Kejriwal and others alleging that the Delhi government's PWD committed illegitimate favouritism in awarding a tender to Surendra Kumar Bansal’s Renu Construction for road and sewer construction projects.

The complainant, Rahul Sharma, the founder of the NGO Roads Anti-Corruption Organisation (RACO) claimed that the tender was awarded at 46 percent lower than the estimated cost of Rs 4,90,000 and that the product quality was inferior.

The Aam Aadmi Party, however, alleged a political vendetta behind the arrest, claiming that the construction work undertaken by Bansal's firm had been given a clean chit by Sriram Labs which had been directed by the ACB to conduct the inspections. The Kejriwal government also claimed that a third party certification of the construction had been conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee.

“After having failed to find anything against Arvind Kejriwal, his MLAs and his ministers, Modi govt stoops low to target Kejriwal's relatives. Modi govt has got Arvind Kejriwal investigated by all agencies. They got Kejriwal raided by CBI and Delhi police but did not get any evidence of any wrongdoing. Now, Modi govt has turned its attention to Kejriwal's relatives. Even there, they seem to be unsuccessful in finding anything wrong,” AAP said.
