President Approves Upper Caste Reservation Bill, To Be Implemented In A Week

The historic decision of the Modi government, which allows 10% reservation in government jobs and educational institutions for economically weaker sections, has got President Ramnath Kovind's approval on Saturday.  

After the final approval, the path to the reservation of 10% in government jobs and educational institutions has been clear. It is being told that this rule will be implemented in a week. 

Earlier, on January 7 the Narendra Modi cabinet had stamped on the decision to give 10 per cent reservation for jobs and education to economically backward people of the general category.

In the Lok Sabha, on 12th, the Constitution of 124th Amendment Bill 2019 was introduced. This bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on the same day, 323 votes were registered in support of this bill.  

The Rajya Sabha passed the landmark bill to provide 10 per cent reservation in jobs and education for the economically-backwards section in the General category.

PM Narendra Modi said that the passage of the Constitution Bill, 2019, in the Lok Sabha was a landmark moment in the nation's history."It sets into motion the process to achieve an effective measure that ensures justice for all sections of society."

Some key features of the bill are as follows:

The reservation will be above the existing 50% and the government will amend Articles 15 and 16, which deal with discrimination and equal opportunity, of the Constitution to implement it.

Those earning less than Rs 8 lakh per annum and own less than 5 acres of land would be eligible for the proposed quota.

The person's residential house should be below 1000 sq ft, and the residential plot should be below 100 yards in a notified municipality area and below 200 yards in a non-notified municipality area.

People owning a residential plot of more than 200 yards in non-notified areas will also not be eligible.

The OBCs reportedly constitute around 45% of the population while SCs and STs account for another 23%. This means that only 27-37% of Indian citizens are currently excluded from the reservation net.
