Pakistan's Turkey Envoy To Replace Abdul Basit As High Commissioner To India

As Abdul Basit completes his tenure as Pakistan’s high commissioner to India, Pakistani Diplomat Sohail Mahmood is expected to take his position when Basit leaves for Islamabad next month.

Sohail Mahmood, who is Pakistan’s current envoy to Turkey, had joined the country’s foreign service back in 1985. He is expected to arrive in India next month before the current high commissioner leaves his position. He will take over his position in February.

Sohail Mahmood has a post graduation degree in history and international relations. Before he was posted abroad, Mahmood was the additional secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Islamabad, where he served as section officer (1986-1991). He was then posted to Pakistani embassy in Ankara where he served from 19911994. He was then promoted to the Director position in Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry. He has also served as the Director-General in Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He played an important role in strengthening the relations between China-Turkey-Pakistan. He has also served in various foreign missions, including in Washington and New York. He was also Pakistan’s ambassador to Thailand.

Pakistan’s current high commissioner to India, Abdu Basit is set to complete his tenure next month after which he will head back to Islamabad.
