After the two factions of AIADMK made the announcement of their merger on Monday morning, the OPS faction leader O Panneerselvam was sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu by the state Governor C. Vidyasagar Rao by the evening.

Panneerselvam, who was twice Chief Minister when Jayalalithaa was jailed and again after she died in December, also got back his Finance portfolio as well as the Deputy Chief Minister position. He had quit as Chief Minister the last time in February following differences with Sasikala, a long-time Jayalalithaa aide.

Soon after the Deputy Chief Minister was sworn in, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tweeted, "Centre assures all possible support to CM Thiru Edappadi K. Palaniswami & Dy CM Thiru O Panneerselvam for the growth of TN."

Announcing the merger, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E. Palaniswami had said that the former Chief Minister and leader of the other faction, O. Panneerselval will be the convener of the party while he himself will be the co-convener.

“Our first priority will be to retrieve the two leaves symbol. We will fulfill all the promises made by Amma,” the Chief Minister had said.

Reciting late AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa, the Chief Minister said, “Amma (Jayalalithaa) had said that after me AIADMK will last over 100 years. We all will make sure it happens.”

Announcing an 11 member coordination committee to run the party, Palaniswami said that the party had few difficulties in recent times, similar to what had happened after MGR's demise, but both OPS & EPS came forward to unite.

The factions had broken off due to disagreements that rose up following the demise of AIADMK chief Jayaram Jayalalithaa last year.
