After quitting as the legal Counsel of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Senior Advocate Ram Jethmalani on Wednesday dropped another bombshell on the AAP leader saying that he has no problem in wavering his fees as he works for thousands of people for free.
Jethmalani quit his legal counsel after Kejriwal denied having used derogatory language against Union Minister Arun Jaitley during the case briefings.
In a court appearance on May 17, Jethmalani had used an offensive word regarding Jaitley, amounting to accusing Jaitley of being a criminal to which Jaitley asked if the words were used on the instructions of Kejriwal. When the advocate replied in the affirmative, Jaitley filed another Rs 10 crore defamation suit against the CM.
The Delhi High Court on Wednesday termed the remarks made by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's former lawyer Ram Jethmalani against Finance Minister Arun Jaitley as "indecent, scandalous and abusive".
The Delhi High Court Judge, asking Jethmalani to maintain decorum said, “You are using words such as crook. Does it fall on free speech? Are you aware that this is an unparliamentary word? No person can be subject to such indecent, offensive, scandalous, abusive questions in the garb of cross-examination.”
He added, “This court is of the view that liberty of free speech cannot be used to make unaccounted statements.”
Delhi Chief Minister in an affidavit told the court, “With due respect, it is submitted that neither Kejriwal nor the Counsel briefing the senior counsel Jethmalani gave instructions to the senior counsel to use the objectionable words on May 17, 2017.”
Ram Jethmalani on Wednesday said that he has quit the case as Mr Kejriwal “lied” when denying to have instructed him to use the word “crook”. He said the Rs 2 crore fees that Mr Kejriwal owes him can be waived as it is no problem as “I work for free for thousands of people”.
