Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar one of the most staunch supporters of unity amongst the Opposition surprised everyone when he backed NDA presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind, and once again he has snubbed the Opposition as he has decided to skip the meeting called by the Opposition to decide on a Vice Presidential candidate on Tuesday. Kumar had similarly not attended the meeting called last month to discuss the Opposition's presidential candidate.

According to reports, CM Kumar is still recovering from a viral infection, however, political circles are viewing his withdrawal from the meetings in a different light. Kumar's silence on the CBI case registered against his ally RJD chief Lalu Prasad and Lalu's family members raised questions on his political agenda as well.

CM Kumar's recent actions have become a cause for concern for the Opposition and Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi has made it a top priority to bring back Kumar's support to the Opposition. As per earlier reports, Gandhi had been planning to meet Kumar separately on the sidelines of the Opposition meet from which the JD(U) leader has now backed out.

Although CM Kumar had specified that his support of former Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind was a one-time incident, his silence on the raids on Lalu Prasad, backing out of Opposition meets and support for other steps taken by the NDA government such as demonetisation, have given the opposition parties concern that he may switch allegiances ahead of the 2019 elections.
