A 'chronic stone pelter' newly recruited into the Hizbul Mujahideen militant group was shot dead in an overnight encounter with security forces in south Kashmir's Anantnag district on Friday.
The encounter took place in Kanibal in Bijbehara area of Anantnag district, 55 km from Srinagar when the police, Army, and CRPF cordoned off a village after receiving intelligence that militants were in the area.
During the two-hour encounter, one militant was killed while two others managed to escape. One Army jawan sustained injuries but is said to be in a stable condition.
The deceased militant was identified as Yawar, a local belonging to Anantnag who had joined Hizbul Mujahideen militant outfit last month. A Self-Loading Rifle (SLR) earlier stolen from a police guard was also recovered from his possession.
The encounter resulted in another casualty as a motorcycle-borne individual was found dead due to bullet injuries likely sustained due to the crossfire. However, no identification proof was found on the victim and he is yet to be identified.
According to officials, the body of the slain militant Yawar was handed over to his family for burial and restrictions were imposed in the town as a preventive measure.
