National Girl Child Day 2019: 'Empowering Girls' Is Theme Of The Year

The nation celebrated National Girl Child Day on Thursday. It was initiated in the year 2008 by the Ministry of Women and Child Development as a national girl’s development mission.

The theme of this National Girl Child Day is “Empowering Girls for a Brighter Tomorrow” and celebrating with objectives of generating awareness on the issue of declining Child Sex Ratio (CSR) and creating a positive environment around valuing the girl child.

The government-initiative has organised various events from January 21 to 26 around the same theme. The seven-day programme will include rallies, campaigns, self-defence training programmes, tree plantations, and other similar activities.

The official observance is being organized by the Ministry of Women & Child Development along with observance the anniversary of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) Scheme.

A booklet on “Innovations under BBBP” will also be released on the occasion. The Ministry has compiled 38 Innovative Activities from Districts across the country to set an example for other Districts.

These interventions have been categorized according to five themes, which are Survival, Protection, Education, Participation and Valuing Girls.

Union Minister, MWCD, Smt. Maneka Sanjay Gandhi will grace the occasion as  Chief Guest and  Minister of State, Dr Virendra Kumar will be the Guest of Honour of the event.

This day is observed so that there is increased awareness among people about all the inequalities faced by the girl child in the society including inequality in education, nutrition, legal rights, medical care, protection, honour killing, child marriage to name a few.

The International Day of the Girl Child is celebrated annually on October 11 across countries. The UN observed day internationally promotes girl's empowerment and fulfilment of their human rights.
