Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a new campaign online with the hashtag #MainBhiChowkidar on Saturday, which essentially means that every Indian should fight the battle against corruption and the various social evils persisting in society.

The campaign appeared to be a jibe at Congress president Rahul Gandhi, who has often used the phrase “chowkidar chor hai” (the watchman is a thief) as a taunt to the prime minister while referring to the controversial Rafale jet deal.

Narendra Modi's verified account pushed a series of tweets, tagging accounts that tweeted to Narendra Modi using #MainBhiChowkidar, including some that are critical of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, in an automated endeavour to push replies from the PM's Twitter account.

Catastrophe soon struck in the digital world of auto responses. @niiravmodi was welcomed with open arms by Narendra Modi, who wrote: “@niiravmodi Your participation makes the #MainBhiChowkidar movement stronger. Here is my message for you.”
