A veritable 'red sea' of more than 30,000 protesting farmers of Maharashtra, led by the All India Kisan Sabha, arrived in Mumbai's Azad Maidan on Monday morning as they marched overnight from the KJ Somaiya Ground, so as to not inconvenience students going to exams on Monday.

"We don't want to create a problem for exam going students of 10th standard, we don't mind suffering more but we don't want our students to suffer," said Ashok Dhawale, president, AIKS.

The farmers, which have covered a distance of around 180 on foot in 6 days will be staging a protest around the Maharashtra State Assembly on Monday, during its budget session, to demand fair numeration and loan waiver.

"Farmers in the state are reeling under the ripples of agrarian distress and they are under huge financial burden. The government has not done anything to provide them any relief. So they are left with no option but to express their anguish through the protest march," Ajit Nawale, state general secretary of AIKS said.

The major demands of the AIKS are complete loan waiver, profit of 1.5 times input cost for all major agriculture commodities and an immediate implementation of M.S. Swaminathan committee's recommendations

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has appointed Cabinet Minister for Water Resources Girish Mahajan as the government's representative to talk to the leaders of the protesting farmers when they reach Vikhroli.

Similar protests took place in Maharashtra last year in June, as a result of which the CM Fadnavis-led government announced a conditional Rs 34,000 crore loan waiver, which farmers claim has not been implemented properly.

The corrupt and greedy politicians of this country are only giving fringe benefits to farmers on the eve of elections. No honest and sincere efforts are made by past Congress govt in last 60 years to solve critical problems of farmers. The same fraudulent tactics were applied by all other political parties subsequently on eve of elections by making false promises to farmers. The people of the country are also responsible since they are voting for corrupt and greedy political parties time and again in elections. This must be stopped forthwith to teach the lesson to fraud and corrupt politicians of this country by ousting them from power like Congress which has seized to power in only five states. Similar action is needed against BJP also who failed to curb CORRUPTION in spite of promises made by all BJP TOP LEADERS which is not acceptable to people of this country in any circumstances. CORRUPTION IS BIGGEST HURDLE IN PROGRESS OF COUNTRY WHICH IS NOT ELIMINATED BY ANY OF POLITICAL PARTIES OF THE COUNTRY SO FAR. A few opposition parties are shedding crocodile tears on problems of farmers for political gain as the election is nearer.
