Mob To The Rescue! Stalker Chops Off 15-Year-Old Girl's Hand In UP, Crowds Save Second Hand

Mobs have earned a bad name through the mob lynchings that tore through the nation, spurring the #NotInMyName public protests, but for one 15-year-old girl in UP's Lakhimpur Kheri, they saved her second hand from being chopped off by a stalker.

The Class IX student was chased by a stalker through a busy market in Lakhimpur Kheri on Wednesday and then pinned to the ground as he attacked her with a sword till one of her hands was completely severed. The attacker, identified as Vinod  Chaurasia, had nearly hacked off her other hand as well but was overpowered by a crowd of 200-300 people who had gathered and he was handed over to the police.

The 15-year-old victim remains hospitalised in critical condition due to massive blood loss.

"One of her hands fell off, while the man kept striking at her other hand even as people overpowered him and rescued the girl from certain death," an eyewitness told media.

According to reports, the victim had been fending off advances from Chaurasia for a while and had also reported the same to her parents. When she reached the milling market area of Fatehpur Saidri on Wednesday afternoon, Chaurasia, working at a welding shop nearby spotted her and approached her once again. When she rebuffed him, he grabbed a sword and attacked her.

Initially, the girl was taken to the district hospital but was transferred to Lucknow when her condition deteriorated.

Kheri superintendent of police S Chinappa said, "Our priority is the health of the girl, who is in a serious condition. Once her condition improves, we will record her statement, following which the motive of the attack can be clearly ascertained."
