Maximum Corporate Donations Go To BJP, Then To Congress

The 'BJP-wave' has taken over the nation, as after forming the central government, e party continues to secure wins in other states, such as its massive victory in Uttar Pradesh.

A recent report by election watch body Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR) has shown that BJP is winning in another sphere as well; by receiving the majority of donations made by business houses.

According to the report which studied the funding received by 5 national parties, namely BJP, Congress, NCP, CPI and CPM, corporate companies donated a total of Rs 956.77 crore to national parties between 2012-13 and 2015-16 out of which the largest share of Rs 704.84 went to BJP. After BJP, Congress received Rs 198.16 crore from corporate donations, while NCP received Rs 50.73 crore, CPM received Rs  1.89 crore and CPI got Rs 0.18 crore.

"Between 2012-13 and 2015-16, five national parties received a total of 1,070.68 crore via voluntary contributions above 20,000 out of which 89 percent of 956.77 crore was from corporates houses," said ADR in its report.

All the data analysed in the report was sourced directly from the Election Commission, based on filings made by political parties to the EC. As per rules, political parties are required to submit to the EC details of donations received that amount to more than Rs 20,000.

The report also showed that majority o the corporate donations were made during the 2014-15 year when the Lok Sabha elections were held.

"Corporate donations received in 2014-15 alone form 60% of the total corporate donations received between 2012-13 and 2015-16," the report stated.

The major contributors to the political parties were electoral trusts and groups of companies, followed by manufacturing and real estate companies.

"Despite not donating during 2012-13, Satya Electoral Trust was the top donor to three of the national parties, between 2012-13 and 2015-16. The Trust donated a total of 35 number of times in three years, amounting to Rs 260.87 crore," says the ADR report.
