Supreme Court on Friday issued a notice to the Election Commission on the plea of 21 Opposition parties seeking direction that 50 per cent EVM results are matched and crosschecked with VVPATs before the declaration of results in the upcoming General Elections, reported ANI.

The top court will hear the matter on March 25 again. The petitioners have been given the liberty to serve the poll body through its secretary. The court directed the competent authority to ensure the presence of an officer to assist it on the date given.

The petition was filed in the names of Andhra Chief Minister and Telugu Desam Party leader N. Chandrababu Naidu, Nationalist Congress Party’s Sharad Pawar, Congress’ K.C. Venugopal, Trinamool Congress’ Derek O’Brien, Samajwadi Party’s Akhilesh Yadav, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam chief M.K. Stalin, Delhi Chief Minister, and Aam Aadmi Party president Arvind Kejriwal, National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah, Loktantrik Janata Dal leader Sharad Yadav, Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Manoj Jha, among others.

The ECI guideline hits at the basic structure of the Constitution by making VVPAT “completely ineffective and merely ornamental in nature,” the petition said.

Recently, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sunil Arora had hit back at political parties for expressing apprehensions on the working of EVMs and said that the machines are treated like a ‘football’.

Addressing a press conference, he had said, “Sorry to say we have made EVMs a football, if result is X, EVM is good if the result is Y EVM is not good as if EVM is voting. It’s you and I who are voting, so no point in going over this.
