Deepa Malik, the first Indian female athlete to win a medal at Paralympics games, joined the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday. Other than Malik, INLD chairman Kehar Singh Rawat also joined the saffron party.

Both Rawat and Malik joined the BJP at its headquarters in New Delhi in the presence of party national general secretary Dr. Anil Jain. Haryana BJP chief Subhash Barala was also present at the event.

Dr Jain said, "We welcome her into the party. She is an inspiration for all of us. She has made the country proud."

After joining the party she said, “the work that PM Narendra Modi has done for women empowerment and his thoughts towards women, is evident. He has put women in leading portfolios, he has also worked extensively for the 'divyangs'.”

48-year-old Deepa Malik is the first woman from India to win a medal in the 2016 Paralympic Games for shot put. She is from Haryana. She also won a gold medal in F-53/54 Javelin event at the 2018 para athletic grand Prix that took place in Dubai.

A few days ago, World Cup-winning Team India Cricketer Gautam Gambhir joined the BJP and was inducted by union ministers Arun Jaitley and Ravi Shankar Prasad into the party.
