Despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi admonishing lawmakers for their continuous absences from Parliament, NDA legislators continue to be absent from house proceedings, with nearly 30 NDA lawmakers absent from Rajya Sabha proceedings on Monday.
In the wake of frequent absences, especially of members missing house proceedings after lunch, BJP national president Amit Shah has issued a whip to BJP lawmakers absent from Rajya Sabha, asking them 'to ensure it is not repeated'.
“Till Parliament is on all members should be present, matter of members not present will be taken up seriously,” said Parliamentary Affairs minister Ananth Kumar after a BJP weekly meeting of MPs.
"When the party issues a whip, members must be present in the House. The party president has taken a serious view of the absence of members. He said it should not have happened and must not be repeated," Ananth Kumar added.
On Monday, an Opposition-backed amendment to the Bill granting constitutional status to the National Commission for Backward Classes was passed in the Rajya Sabha with 74 votes to 52. The Opposition had specified that the commission should have a panel of 5 members from OBC category including 1 woman and 1 member from another minority, while the government had suggested that the commission composition should not be stipulated in advance. In the following voting which took place, the government lost to the opposition.
