Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's resignation from the Grand Alliance in Bihar with RJD and Congress came suddenly on June 26, however, according to sources, 10 minutes before he resigned he spoke with Lalu Prasad Yadav, informing his RJD ally of his impending resignation.

"Lalu-ji, I beg your forgiveness, but after running the government for 20 months, I cannot do it any longer. I am going to quit," the Chief Minister told his ally, Lalu, NDTV reported. Lalu hastily and fruitlessly asked him to reconsider but within half an hour the news of Nitish's resignation reached the media followed by news of his alliance with the BJP.

Sworn-in once again as the Chief Minister of Bihar the very next day, Nitish won the floor test ordered by the Governor with a clear majority on Friday, making it clear that the decision to resign was not made impulsively.

According to sources close to the RJD chief, early signs of Nitish Kumar growing restive in the Grand Alliance became visible from May when the Chief Minister delayed accepting an invitation for Lalu Yadav's plan for an August rally against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Cracks in the Grand Alliance became worse after Lalu's son, former Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav was named in a corruption case on July 7. While CM Nitish indicated that he wanted Tejashwi to resign or at the very least make a public and detailed defence, the RJD ruled out any possibility of such actions.

Using the corruption cases against the Yadavs as the last straw, Nitish resigned stating that his conscience will not allow him to work in such an atmosphere.
