Born in a small village of Nellore in Andhra Pradesh, it was a long and hard fought journey for Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu from a village boy in Southern India to the Vice President of India.
M Venkaiah Naidu has been declared as the next Vice President of India. While he has been announced as the next Vice President, he takes over from outgoing Vice President Hamid Ansari on 11 August, when he completes his second consecutive term in the office.
While we have some time before he takes over the office, let's take some time off our busy schedules to know about our next Vice President.
Interested in politics since childhood, Naidu was an active participant in 'Jai Andhra Movements' of 1972. He was also the President of the youth wing of Janata Party from 1977 to 1980. Then in 1980, Naidu decided to join the Bharatiya Janata Party. Soon after his joining the party, he rose in ranks and became the General Secretary of the Party in Andhra Pradesh in 1985. Then in 1988, he was appointed as the state president of the party.
A key member of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Cabinet, Naidu has served as the Minister of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, Urban Development and Information and Broadcasting in the Modi government while he has also served as the Union Minister for Rural Development in Atal Bihar Vajpayee government.
His skills made the most of him and he fought his first election to victory from Udayagiri constituency in the 1978 Andhra Pradesh assembly election. He also won the constituency again in 1983.
It was his skills and qualities as a leader and an individual that boosted him to the top of the party and then into the Rajya Sabha for a consecutive three year between 1998 and 2014.
Like most politicians, he has also been jailed, back in the time of emergency in the country, Naidu went against the Indira government and got jailed. Then again, he was accused of disrupting Sanjay Gandhi's meeting and was jailed again.
By the 2000's, Naidu had become a prominent personality in the Bharatiya Janata Party. It was his tactical mind and national image that got him the National President position of the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2002. He served as the Party President for 2 years.
After Narendra Modi took the reins of the Party in New Delhi, Venkaiah Naidu was moved to the cabinet for his brilliance. He has been in the Modi cabinet through all the shuffles and drops outs, since 2014, Naidu has served in three different Ministries.
Finally, when the time came and the NDA had to choose their next Vice President to assist their President Ram Nath Kovind in the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the NDA chose Venkaiah Naidu as the only deserving candidate who could take over the position.
