Tragedy Strikes Amarnath Yatra Again, 16 Killed As Bus Falls Off Srinagar Highway

Less than one week after the terrorist attack on Amarnath Yatra pilgrims that led to the death of 8 people, a bus carrying Amarnath Yatra pilgrims fell off the road on the Jammu-Srinagar highway leading to the death of 16 people and injury to 30 others.

According to reports, the bus spun out of the driver's control at Nachnala and rolled into the gorge near Banihal town in Jammu and Kashmir's Ramban district. 

Rescue operations are already underway.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SP), Ramban, Mohan Lal said, “The bus, bearing registration number JK02Y 0594, was heading towards Srinagar when it rolled down into a gorge near an Army camp in Nachilana area of Banihal in Ramban district.”

The seriously injured pilgrims were flown by Army helicopters to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Jammu. So far, nineteen injured have been airlifted to Jammu for specialised treatment.

While the rescue operations continue, the Prime Minister, Home Minister and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti have all expressed their grief over the incident. Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “Extremely pained by the loss of lives of Amarnath Yatris due to a bus accident in J&K. My thoughts are with families of the deceased.”
