Kerala Congress Legislator Arrested For Alleged Sexual Harassment Of 51-Year-Old Woman

A Congress legislator from Kerala was arrested on Saturday for alleged sexual harassment and stalking of a 51-year-old woman who attempted to commit suicide earlier this week.

The case surfaced as the victim attempted suicide by consuming an excessive amount of sleeping pills. However, she was rushed to the hospital in time and is out of danger now.

The woman's husband had filed a complaint with the local police station near here accusing the legislator of threatening and harassing his wife over the phone.

Kollam City Police Commissioner Ajeetha Begum said, “A case under IPC section 376 has been registered against Congress MLA M Vincent representing the Kovalam segment, after the woman's statement was recorded at a hospital in Neyyatinkara, where she is undergoing treatment.”

The legislator M. Vincent was arrested in Thiruvananthapuram after being questioned for more than two hours. According to reports, the police had questioned him at his hostel and then had him moved to an undisclosed location before arresting him.

The police team will now meet up with Kollam Superintendent of Police S. Ajeetha Begum, who heads the probe team.

Vincent, who represents Kovalam Assembly constituency in the state capital district, said he has done no wrong and claimed he was a victim of political conspiracy. Vincent has moved for anticipatory bail from a court.

The woman on Saturday told the media that she has been facing severe mental harassment from the legislator and he has misbehaved with her on two different occasions. Senior women leaders in the Congress party M. Bindu Krishna and Shanimol Usman have asked Vincent to step down as the legislator and face the probe.

Meanwhile, angry youth activists of the CPI-M took to the streets in the state capital and burnt an effigy of the legislator.
