Makkal Needhi Maiam President Kamal Haasan has joined the ongoing anti-Sterlite protests in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu intensifying the demands for shutting down the Sterlite Copper Smelter plant. Protestors and environmentalists allege that the plant has been causing long-term pollution since 1996.

The protests began after a proposed expansion of the copper plant with residents demanding not just the expansion to be scuttled but the shutdown of the entire plant. The protests that have been going on for more than a month now found its resonance outside the country as well when a group of people protested outside the London residence of Sterlite promoter Anil Agarwal.

Kamal Haasan reached Thoothukudi earlier on Sunday and joined the protests. Speaking to journalists in Chennai ahead of his departure Haasan said that we cannot allow a Bhopal like tragedy in Thoothukudi. “We do not need any industry that does not care about the lives of people,” Haasan said after reaching Thoothukudi. Addressing the protestors the MNM President said, “I have come here as an individual. More than an Actor, I have come here as a Tamizhan.”

Superstar Rajnikanth too threw his support behind the protest via Twitter. Interestingly his support came a day after Kamal Haasan announced his plan of visiting Thoothukudi and joining the protests.
