Justice Justi Chelameswar on Wednesday declined an invitation to be part of a farewell function organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association in his honour. Citing personal reasons, Justice Chelameswar who is scheduled to retire on June 22 politely refused to participate in the function. Justice Chelameswar is the senior-most judge in the apex court.

While this can be seen as a departure from tradition, this is not new with Justice Chelameswar. He had declined to participate in his own farewell when he was transferred from Andhra Pradesh High Court as the Chief Justice of Guwahati High Court. He had also skipped the farewell function that was organised for Justice TS Thakur by the SCBA.

The Executive Committee of Supreme Court Bar Association met Justice Chelameswar in an attempt to persuade him but were unsuccessful.

Justice Chelameswar made news recently when he, along with three other Supreme Court Judges organised the unparalleled press conference against the way in which Chief Justice Misra was running the apex court.

He was part of the two-judge bench that delivered the historic judgement striking down section 66(A) of the IT Act. Justice Chelameswar was the lone voice against the collegium system. He was the sole judge who ruled in favour of the National Judicial Appointments Commission legislation, terming the collegium system for lack of transparency.
