In a shocking development, the Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Mass Communications has decided to start a 'gau shala' (cow shelter) in their upcoming 50 acre campus in Bhopal's Banskhedi.

News Agency ANI reported, "MP: Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Mass Communication to run a 'gau shala' at their new 50 acre campus in Bhopal."

The university's Vice Chancellor confirmed the news to a media outlet saying, ""In the new upcoming campus we have around 50 acres of land. Of this around two acres of land is such that it could not be put to any use. So the question was raised before architects. There were several suggestions but one suggestion that we decided to act upon was of starting a 'gau shala'."

However, when asked about the reason behind the cow shelter in a journalism campus, the VC said, "Firstly it will provide unadulterated milk  and its products like ghee and butter which will be given to students staying in hostels on the campus. If we produce milk which exceeds the demand of the students staying on campus we will supply it to the other staff members who will stay on campus. Also we will do organic farming and the cow dung would be used as manure so there is a win-win situation."

He also added that the students will have an option to learn about the management of a gaushala and volunteer for 'gau seva' in the shelter as well.

Reacting to the VC's decision, the spokesperson for MP's Indian National Congress Pankaj Chaturvedi said, "He is trying to please his RSS masters. What is a journalism university meant for? Should the students be learning about journalism or should they be doing 'gau seva.'"
