Jayanagar BJP MLA BN Vijay Kumar Collapses During Election Rally, Dies At Age 59

BN Vijay Kumar, the BJP MLA from Jayanagar in Bengaluru died of a massive heart attack on Friday morning, soon after he collapsed during an election rally in Jayanagar on Thursday night.

The 59-year-old incumbent MLA was admitted to the government-run Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology on Thursday night after he collapsed during an election rally.

"Doctors attended to him till around 1 am this morning, but efforts to resuscitate him failed," state BJP spokesperson S Prakash said to PTI.

BJP Karnataka confirmed the death of BN Vijay Kumar in a tweet: Sri BN Vijay Kumar, Jayanagar's popular 2 term MLA & BJP candidate passed away last night due to cardiac arrest. His humility, dedication & commitment to party and people will be remembered. A great loss for us. Our condolences to his family.

Vijay Kumar had been one of the prominent legislators of the BJP and had represented the Jayanagar constituency twice. He had filed nominations for a third term in the upcoming Karnataka assembly elections on May 12, competing against the Congress candidate, Karnataka home minister R Ramalinga Reddy's daughter Soumya Reddy.

A bachelor and a civil engineering graduate, Vijay Kumar had joined the BJP in 1990 and was known for his simplicity and mild manners.

Before his death, Kumar had said to media that his party workers and voters in the Jayanagar constituency were being intimidated and directed to vote for Congress or face 'dire consequences'.

Current Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and BJP's chief ministerial candidate BS Yeddyurappa expressed condolences on the death of Vijay Kumar.
