In a major decision on reservation, the central government on Wednesday extended the OBC perks of central government job reservation to people earning up to Rs 8 lakh from the current Rs 6 lakh annual salary.

Talking about the cabinet's decision, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said, "There will be sub categorizations within the OBC list for the purposes of the central government employment."

According to the reports, the decision to create sub-quotas in OBC has been taken to ensure that dominant castes in the OBC community don't get all the benefits.

Principal Spokesperson for the Government of India and Principal Director General of Press Information Bureau, Frank Noronha tweeted, "#CabinetDecision: Commission to be set up to examine sub-categorization of OBCs," along with a picture.

With the increase in the cut, those who belong to the OBC category and earn Rs 8 lakh or less will be able to get the benefit of reservation in central government jobs while those earning more will not.

Frank Noronha also added the video of the cabinet briefing on the decision in his tweet.

The layer has been pushed up every now and then since the cut was fixed at Rs one lakh in 1993. It was increased to 2.5 lakh in 2004, 4.5 lakh in 2008 and then further to 6 lakh in 2013.
