The government will now pick out tax evaders by prying into people’s social media accounts.

According to a report in the Economic Times, the government has decided to sniff out tax evaders from the information they post on social media handles like Instagram and Facebook.

According to this report, starting next month, the government will now begin amassing a warehouse of virtual information collected not just from traditional sources like banks but also from social media sites, as it looks to match residents.

“Officials will be able to spot those who pay too little tax without raiding offices and homes as they currently do”.

In a recent public speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that over two crore people went on foreign trips last year while only 32 lakh have declared income over Rs 10 lakh, wondering questioning the plausibility of the given information.

The Prime Minister has been strict on the issues of tax evasion and black money since the beginning of his term. Time and time again, he has warned of strict actions against the people holding black money.

He has also said that 37,000 shell companies have been detected evading taxes while another three lakh firms are under suspicious of dealings with black money.

The Modi government has also implemented linking Permanent Account Numbers (PAN) with Aadhaar cards with the aim to prevent people from using more than one PAN card to get out of paying their taxes.

The new method to catch tax evaders is expected to come in action from this financial year itself.
