Gorkhaland Supporter Found Dead, Darjeeling Unrest Continues

The condition of Darjeeling unrest worsened as the young Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) supporter, Tashi Bhutia was found dead on Saturday.

The GJM along with other parties in the state have lodged a police complaint accusing the police of killing the youth.

Amid the ongoing unrest over demands of a separate state Gorkhaland, casted out of West Bengal, Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM). GJM leader Binay Tamang said, “The youth was killed by police without any reason. His body has bullet injuries. We demand that the policemen involved be punished.”

The police officials have already denied the allegations of killing the youth. Making a statement Police officials said that as of now, “we don't have any reports of police firing,” however, the officer added, “We are looking into the incident” and promised to give further details by the afternoon.

The incident took place when the young GJM supporter, Tashi Bhutia was on his way back home at Sonada at around 12.30 AM.

The Darjeeling unrest was initially triggered after the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced mandating Bengali as a subject across the state from Class 1 to 10. Soon afterwards, the unrest was turned into the decade long demand of a separate state, Gorkhaland, carved out of West Bengal.

With the recent development in the Darjeeling, the unrest continues for its 24th day of its indefinite shutdown that has crippled normal life in the hills state.

The GJM had taken out a rally from Darjeeling station to Chowkbazar on Friday afternoon, demanding the withdrawal of forces from the area and restoration of Internet services that have been snapped since June 18.
