Grandson of the great Mahatma Gandhi, former West Bengal governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi has been announced as the Opposition's pick for the post of Vice President of India. Gandhi was elected unanimously at the Opposition parties meeting on Tuesday.

While Gandhi's name was also rumoured to be selected for the Opposition's presidential candidate, he lost out to Meira Kumar, a Dalit candidate that was selected to face-off against the NDA's presidential candidate, another Dalit Ram Nath Kovind.

According to sources, Gandhi's name for the vice president post came up during the meet of the 18 Opposition parties held on Tuesday to decide on their candidate.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was conspicuously absent at the meeting although he did send a representative of his party JD(U) in the form of Sharad Yadav. The Opposition party meeting had top leaders in attendance including Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi, former prime minister Manmohan Singh, Derek O'Brien from TMC, Sitaram Yechury from CPI (M), Omar Abdulla of NC, Naresh Agarwal from SP and Satish Chandra Mishra from BSP.

Since the NDA is yet to announce their candidate for the vice president's post, if they reach a consensus with the Opposition on their choice, an election would not be required. If the NDA announces a different candidate, the polling will take place on August 5, and the votes will be counted on same evening.
